US$ 20,000 DISASTER RELIEF GRANTED FOR ROMBLON

In response to a request from Soroptimist International of the Philippines Region (A Foundation) Inc. (SIPR), US$20,000.00 in disaster relief was granted by Soroptimist International of the Americas (SIA) to assist women victims of Typhoon Frank which devastated several coastal towns in Romblon, Philippines in June 2008. Ms. Evelyn R. San Buenaventura, SIPR Auditor and proponent of the grant request, conducted an ocular inspection of the area. SIPR has partnered with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) led by Gen. Jaime Buenaflor, the Department of Education, civic and community leaders and other corporations to carry out the relief mission and rehabilitation assistance in the stricken areas.

Construction of a Multi-Purpose Hall

A multi-purpose hall is now under construction in Barangay España, San Fernando, Romblon, in the center of the town near the parish church and barangay hall. Fr. Jojo Flores, Administrative Officer of the Diocese of Romblon, is managing the building construction; AFP is providing the labor component; and the cost of the project is being funded through SIA’s disaster relief grant. The multi-purpose hall is expected to be completed by the end of March 2009.

The multi-purpose hall will be used for various programs for women on skills training, education, health, etc. On February 4, 2009, SIPR Governor Carmen A. Flor signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Splash Corporation for the conduct of skills training in Cosmetology. Likewise, Ms. Adelina Ranga of the Technological Institute of the Philippines, is preparing to conduct several skills training which will boost the earning capacity of women.

Basic Computer Training for 106 graduating high school girls is ongoing at the España High School. The Department of Education donated 10 computers, while the salary of the instructor, one computer and supplies are provided under SIA’s disaster relief grant. The first batch of students will complete the course in March 2009.

Other livelihood skills training are in the pipeline such as the processing of rattan which is abundant in the province and food preservation.
